Geospatial Energy Map of India Launched
We’ve got to alter our fossil fuel dependence and go to other energy sources.
~ Sylvia Earle

India is a country full of natural resources and biodiversity, The Land rich in Forest,
Water resources, Coal and Petroleum produce. With efficient energy resources and
incredible biome India needs an automated system to ensure the conservation and
judicious use of the resources. The NITI Aayog (National Institute for Transforming
India) well recognized as Government’s think-tank along with the ISRO (Indian Space
Research Organization has developed a comprehensive geographic information system
(GIS) energy map of India to aid planning and investment decisions along with disaster
management.
GIS will identify and locate all the primary and secondary sources of energy and their
transportation and transmission network. The NITI Aayog affirms that “GIS is a unique
effort aimed at integrating energy data scattered across multiple organizations and to
present it in a consolidated, visually appealing graphical manner.”
GIS provides a holistic picture of all energy resources of the country which helps to energy
installations such as conventional power plants, oil and gas wells, petroleum refineries,
coal fields and coal blocks, It would also help in District wise data on renewable
resources and its potential through 27 thematic layers.

India is highly rich in natural resources scattered all over the country and interlinked in
more various states of the country. The wise management of the resources can take
place only with good thematic visualization of the resources. The GIS would also
ensure the real-time and integrated planning of the energy sector of India, with its large
geographical distribution and interdependence.
According to NITI Aayog vice-chairman Mr. Rajiv Kumar, “Energy markets have
immense potential to bring in efficiency gains. Going forward, GIS-based mapping of
energy assets will be advantageous to all concerned stakeholders and will help in
accelerating the policy-making process as fragmented data has been brought together.”
It can improve organizational integration. GIS would then integrate
software, hardware, and also data to capture, analyse, manage and so display
all forms of information is geographically referenced. GIS would also allow viewing,
questioning, understanding, visualizing, and interpreting the data in several ways
which will reveal relationships, trends, and patterns in the form of globes, maps, charts, and reports. Geographic Information System is to provide help in answering questions
as well as solve problems through looking at the data in a way that is easily and
quickly shared. GIS technology could also be integrated into the framework of any
enterprise information system. It would also increase the number of employment
opportunities.

In general, there is a fact that GIS technology has the ability to offer great
advantages over the fact that Earth is round and there are possibilities of errors. With
those pros and cons that are mentioned above, there will no doubt that there is still great potential if GIS technology is used apart from the idea of some disadvantages.
Now that we are in this generation, the use of GIS technology is true of great
opportunity to experience its best advantages.
